The meeting ended, but my body stayed tense.

This story has been edited for privacy, clarity and length while preserving the heart of what was shared.

I knew something had changed when I started rehearsing ordinary conversations before walking into the office. Nothing dramatic had happened that I could point to. It was the accumulation of small moments that kept telling me my judgement mattered less than my ability to appear agreeable.

Everyone moved on to the next agenda item. My nervous system did not get the memo. I told myself I was being professional. Looking back, I was trying to stay safe inside a system where speaking plainly always seemed to come with a cost.

The hardest part was not the workload. It was carrying a version of the story home every evening and pretending it did not follow me through the door. I am sharing this because silence can look like strength from the outside while it slowly empties you on the inside.
