I knew something had changed when I started rehearsing ordinary conversations before walking into the office. Nothing dramatic had happened that I could point to. It was the accumulation of small moments that kept telling me my judgement mattered less than my ability to appear agreeable.
The meeting ended with applause. I went to the bathroom and tried to remember how to breathe. I told myself I was being professional. Looking back, I was trying to stay safe inside a system where speaking plainly always seemed to come with a cost.
The hardest part was not the workload. It was carrying a version of the story home every evening and pretending it did not follow me through the door. I am sharing this because silence can look like strength from the outside while it slowly empties you on the inside.
The stories are anonymous. The feelings are not.
